What We Do

Say Goodbye To Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction Pain

Peroneal nerve dysfunction can cause severe chronic pain in your lower leg and foot. This symptom, alone, can get in the way of your ability to live your life fully, be productive at work, or even carry out the simplest of activities.

But the picture is, unfortunately, more complicated. A compressed or damaged peroneal nerve can also lead to the inability to move your foot, straighten your toes, or flex your ankle. It can lead to a loss of sensation in the shin and foot and cause complications such as foot drop.

These symptoms aren’t something you can just ignore or mask by relying on medications. As damage to the peroneal nerve progresses, the pain and disability you are experiencing may become overpowering. That’s where the innovative whole-person approach can help. Neuragenex Neurofunctional Pain Management is a multi-approach treatment plan that targets the systemic inflammation at the root cause of your condition. It can help you improve your mobility and coordination, as well as lay the foundations of long-term optimal musculoskeletal health

This table summarizes the benefits of Neuragenex NFPM for pain due to peroneal nerve dysfunction.

  • Exhibiting a lack of coordination
  • Weakening of ankles and feet

What Is Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction?

The common peroneal nerve (also known as the common fibular nerve) is one of the two main nerves that branch off the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body – it starts from the lower back and is responsible for innervating the body’s lower extremities.

The peroneal nerve, which starts at the top of the glutes, has a similar, but more specific, function. It travels down the back of the thigh and wraps around the knee, where it splits into two main branches:

  • A deep peroneal nerve runs on the inside of the leg and over the ankle bone. It is responsible for controlling the function of areas of the foot, such as the big and second toes.
  • The superficial peroneal nerve runs on the outer aspect of the lower leg, and it provides sensation and movement control to the top of the foot and the other toes.

It is thanks to the peroneal nerve that you are able to experience pain, temperature, and touch sensations throughout your legs. This nerve also plays a major role in enabling movements such as lifting your toes and ankle

Peroneal nerve dysfunction may occur when this important nerve is compressed, damaged, or irritated. This can occur due to surgical interventions that affect the knee (e.g. knee replacement surgery), traumatic injuries like fractures and dislocations, and conditions that damage the nerves, such as diabetes.

Mild peroneal nerve injuries can lead to numbness, tingling, the feeling of pins and needles, weakness, and foot pain, while more severe nerve injuries can cause mobility problems, disability, and complications like foot drop. Foot drop is defined as an abnormal walking pattern (gait) in which you are unable to clear your foot off the ground and drag your toes due to the inability to flex the ankle and lift the foot upward.

Although anyone can develop a peroneal nerve injury, this disorder is more common if you have inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, or anorexia nervosa. Traumatic injury to the leg (such as fractures and dislocations), as well as habits such as crossing your legs when you sit, can also lead to this condition.

The Neuragenex NFPM Protocol For Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction Pain

If you have been diagnosed with peroneal nerve dysfunction, your treatment options may all seem equally unappealing. You may use painkillers, but these don’t do much more than temporarily mask your symptoms and, on the other hand, they can lead to severe side effects.

Another option is conservative therapies like gait training exercises and physical therapy. While these approaches can help you improve your mobility, they may not be as efficient as you’d hoped in improving your musculoskeletal health. Lastly, in severe cases, your only option may be risky surgical interventions to relieve pressure on the peroneal nerve or repair damaged nerve fibers.

Fortunately, there is no longer a need to endure the side effects of medications or the long, painful recovery times associated with surgery. Neuragenex Neurofunctional Pain Management has been developed as a non-drug, non-invasive approach that targets the root cause of musculoskeletal pain: systemic inflammation. Below, we’ll explore the therapies combined in this whole-person approach and how they can help you regain your health and magnify your quality of life.
